Teaching to learn
I submitted final grades for fall 2024 earlier today. Whooooohooooo!
And at the end of a yoga class last week, someone asked what I did… (I’d mentioned that sharing yoga wasn’t my primary). I told her. She says, “you must really like to teach”. Hmm. Yes, I guess I do! She hit a bullseye for me - this I appreciate
There is a saying that goes, "To teach is to learn twice”. I’d say it’s > twice, and this is why I do it. Learning is my favorite. When I step into a classroom or a yoga studio, I’m not there to share knowledge (even though, I do). Selfishly… I’m there to open myself up to discovery, growth, connection… I love these things
My students challenge me to think differently, explore new ideas, and deepen understanding. When explaining macronutrients or guiding a class through a heart-opening pose, I’m learning. Teaching keeps me curious and open, approaching each day with the mindset of a beginner. It’s a continual cycle of information sharing, upcycling, reflection, integration - I love it
I learn from my kids. Their questions, perspectives, experiences make me a better person - I never expected this. Parenting, like teaching, is a two-way street of giving and receiving, sharing and learning
At its core, teaching is an act of love. It’s about nurturing potential—both in others and within ourselves. Every semester that wraps up, I’m reminded why I started: it’s because I crush on learning ~
